Although our team of experts can help you design and create the kitchen of your dreams. We know there some great DIY'ers. We like to help those that are handy but not savvy when it comes to knowing what new building codes and rules that are out there.  So check out some topics below before you "reno you should know."

Electric

Did you know?

In 2023, the National Electrical Code (NEC) changed, making electrical outlets on kitchen islands optional and, if installed, requiring them to be on or above the countertop, not below.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the changes:

  •   Outlets  are no longer mandatory:

The 2023 NEC eliminated the requirement to install receptacles on kitchen islands or peninsulas.

If you want outlets installed, they must be above the countertop:

  • If you choose to install outlets on an island or peninsula, they must be located on or above the countertop, not below.

Provisions for future installations:

  •  Even if you don't install outlets initially, you must still make provisions for future installations (e.g., wiring, conduit, junction box).

• Reason for the change:

  • The change was driven by safety concerns, specifically to reduce the risk of injuries from cords being pulled or snagged, especially by children.

• GFCI Protection:

  • All outlets serving countertop surfaces, including those on islands and peninsulas, should have GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) protection.
